UN Public Campaign on the World Environment Day
Ashgabat, 31 May 2021 – The staff of the IOM Mission in Turkmenistan participated in the tree planting activity devoted to the World Environment Day (WED) organized jointly by the UN Agencies in Turkmenistan. The event that took place near the UN compound was attended by all UN agencies staff, including UNDP, UNDSS, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNODC, WHO, and IOM.
WED is celebrated annually on 5 June and is the principal vehicle of the UN for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of the environment. This day is an opportunity for driving the momentum, to realize the responsibility to care for nature, and to renew people’s commitment to save the environment and promote the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The theme for World Environment Day 2021 is “Ecosystem Restoration” and focuses on resetting our relationship with nature. It will also mark the formal launch of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030, which is intended to massively scale up the restoration of degraded and destroyed ecosystems to fight the climate crisis and prevent the loss of a million species.
The current event was organized within the framework of the UN Public Campaign on the occasion of the WED to demonstrate an example of good practice, promote worldwide awareness and action for the environment. It also corresponds to the state environmental policy pursued by Turkmenistan that is combined with the policy of stable development of the world community and the protection of the ecosystems of the globe.
Seedlings for planting, as well as the organization of the planting site and necessary equipment, were provided by the UNDP Turkmenistan project "Sustainable Cities in Turkmenistan: Integrated Green Urban Development in Ashgabat and Awaza". Trees were planted in a special disintegrating container, instead of bare-root trees to ensure that they do not experience transplant shock during this season of the year.
