IOM Presents Its 2020-2024 Strategy for Central Asia
Ashgabat – IOM conducted a videoconference to presents its Regional Strategy for Central Asia for 2020-2024. The presentation was hosted by IOM Mission in Astana (Kazakhstan) and was joined by a large number of government agencies, UN and other development partners from all five Central Asian countries.
The Strategy recognizes that “Central Asia remains a region reliant on mobility, with millions on the move in search of better work and life opportunities. Migration is recognized as an undeniable source of prosperity, innovation and sustainable development, becoming a major contributing factor to economic development.” The overall aim of the Strategy is to assist CA countries in harnessing migration as the resource for dynamic development and attaining SDGs. Aligned with IOM’s global approach CA Strategy is focusing on:
-Building resilience via assisting vulnerable migrants and their families.
-Mitigating the factors of displacement, such as climate change, reduction of risks, and economic pressures.
-Assisting in building regular and safe migratory channels; as well as iv. supporting the governments of Central Asia in introducing effective, coherent and inclusive and evidence-based migration management policies.
“IOM continues to invest into partnerships with governments, donors, migrants and other stakeholders, and utilize a unified management approach," underlined Ms. Renate Helde, IOM Regional Director for South-East, East Europe and Central Asia.
The Strategy will remain a living document and the process of its development will continue based on the feedback of partners.
The presentation of IOM’s Strategy was attended by the following ministries and agencies of Turkmenistan: Ministry of Internal Affairs, State Migration Service, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, Ministry of Finance and Economy, Institute of State, Law and Democracy, Mejlis, Ministry of Internal Affairs.
